Vega Protocol unveils trading platform to bet on unlaunched tokens market cap
VEGA Vega Protocol

Derivatives layer Vega Protocol has announced its pre-launch market cap (MCAP) futures, allowing traders to speculate on the market cap of tokens before they are officially launched. According to Vega’s announcement, the MCAP was built to let traders hedge against the volatility associated with new token releases.

Vega’s market cap futures are designed to be held until expiry without the need for funding rates, reducing price risk for participants. The platform employs custom risk models and price-monitoring auctions to maintain the integrity of these futures.

The decision comes after Vega offers futures markets for EigenLayer Points and Hyperliquid points. The first asset introduced in the platform is nftperp’s native token, as announced on the Vega Forum. Moreover, the Vega community believes that market cap futures will enhance market efficiency and decentralized price discovery by providing a consensus on the value of an asset prior to its availability.

Unlike perpetual contracts that often evolve into contracts on the token itself post-launch, Vega’s market cap futures are settled based on the market cap at launch time. The announcement states that this focus allows traders to concentrate on the launch value without the need to consider subsequent price movements or token release quantities.

Vega is utilizing the UMA Optimistic Oracle in their new MCAP. The futures represent a millionth of the token’s full market cap at launch, providing a clear benchmark for comparison.

Coinbase-backed Vega Protocol Takes Aim at Polymarket With New Prediction Market

The new feature is part of Cosmos-based Vega’s latest Colosseo II upgrade.

Cosmos-based decentralized exchange Vega Protocol is seeking to emulate Polymarket’s success by launching its own prediction market as part of its latest upgrade.

The new platform’s main differentiator is its more flexible market design compared to Polymarket’s fully built-out platform. Users can also take long or short positions with potential binary (0 or 100) or non-binary (any value between 0 and 100) settlements. The platform also offers live game scoring for real-time updates and additional cross-chain capabilities.

"The launch of prediction markets on Vega is a significant step in our evolution,” said Barney Mannerings, co-founder of Vega Protocol, in a statement shared with The Defiant. “While platforms like Polymarket have shown the appetite for prediction markets, Vega offers a fully decentralized, permissionless alternative. The only limit is our imagination!”

Vega’s native token, VEGA, rallied 35% on the news to $0.19. The team hopes that tapping into the popularity of prediction markets will pique investors' interest, with the protocol’s market cap down 66% to $12 million from $36 million in early May.

VEGA PriceBettors that have been flocking to Polygon-based Polymarket are now seeing similar platforms pop up across the ecosystem, which indicates that crypto-focused gambling has found product-market fit.

Crypto’s most popular prediction market tripled its monthly volume in July to $387 million from $111 million in June. Monthly active users also soared, with a 50% uptick to 65,013 bettors in the past thirty days.

Polymarket’s popularity is also a testament to how accurate these markets have become. Users are increasingly looking to prediction markets to gauge sentiment, especially in politics, as the U.S. presidential race between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris continues to heat up.

For the first time ever, Harris has inched ahead of Trump in terms of who will be elected in the upcoming November elections.

Vega, a perpetual futures platform that allows users to bet on the future value of digital assets, unveiled its Colosseo II upgrade less than a month after its Colosseo I release. The first upgrade, which took place on July 16, added spot markets, an Arbitrum bridge for settling markets in Arbitrum-based assets, and cross-chain deposits via Axelar.

Pantera Capital-backed Vega Protocol shuts down layer-1 chain

Vega Protocol is shutting down its blockchain, with validators set to maintain the network temporarily to allow users to withdraw funds before a full cessation by late October.

Trading-focused blockchain Vega (VEGA) is winding down its operations after an on-chain governance vote passed with near-unanimous support, directing the project’s resources toward core software development.

The decision to retire the Vega chain, which supported decentralized trading, marks the end of the community’s support for the blockchain and its native VEGA token. In a blog announcement on Sept. 12, the team behind Vega Protocol said that trading on the network has already ceased, and the chain is now entering a “ramp down” period. Following the news, the price of VEGA plunged 14% down to $0.06203.

“Our understanding from the validators is that the Vega chain will remain operational until at least Oct. 27 to allow users plenty of time to withdraw their assets.”

The Vega Protocol team further added that a final vote is underway to determine the settlement prices for suspended markets and allocate approximately $28,000 in unused insurance funds to validators to “ensure the network operates for the agreed ramp down period.” The vote, which closes on Sept. 13, will finalize the market settlement at the last recorded prices when trading was suspended.

The team also warned that any assets left on-chain after operations cease could become irretrievable, as the protocol requires two-thirds of validators to authorize withdrawals from the network’s bridge.

Vega Protocol launched its network in 2023, following the vision outlined in its 2018 whitepaper, which detailed an application-specific blockchain built on the Tendermint proof-of-stake consensus mechanism. In 2019, the team raised $5 million in a seed round led by Pantera Capital, followed by a $43 million community token sale on CoinList in 2021.

The Vega Protocol community has voted to retire its Layer 1 (L1) blockchain and the associated VEGA token.

The decision marks the end of the Vega chain’s operations, which were focused on facilitating derivatives trading on a decentralized platform.

The unanimous governance vote triggered the automatic shutdown of trading activities on the Vega blockchain, the project said in a recent blog post.

Vega Shuts Down L1 Chain Due to Lack of TractionThe protocol launched its first on-chain markets after the release of its alpha mainnet in 2023.

However, the lack of substantial traction in its current form as an application-specific blockchain (app chain) led to the community’s decision to discontinue the project.

The Vega team explained that the network did not achieve the growth and interest required to sustain it as a viable platform.

Consequently, the project will now focus on maintaining the core software rather than continuing with the blockchain and token in their present state.

“We are proud of the software we have built, but unfortunately, the chain and token did not gain the momentum needed to ensure sustainability,” said Barney Mannerings, co-founder of Vega Protocol.

He further emphasized that the resources would now be allocated to supporting other initiatives based on Vega’s core technology.

One such initiative is Nebula, a decentralized exchange that will utilize the Vega software.

Nebula operates independently from the Vega Protocol and will have its own token, NEB.

The on-chain vote to retire the Vega chain has officially passed.

As a result, the Vega chain no longer supports trading on any markets. The chain is expected to cease operations after a “ramp-down” period, during which validators are incentivised to maintain node operations,…

— Vega Protocol (@vegaprotocol) September 11, 2024 As a gesture to the existing VEGA token holders, the Nebula team plans to offer NEB tokens to them, providing some continuity of value within the ecosystem.

“We believe the future of our software lies in open-source development, where projects like Nebula can build upon it,” Mannerings added.

As part of the shutdown process, the Vega chain will enter a “ramp down” phase, during which validators will maintain nodes to ensure users can withdraw their funds.

Validators to Keep Vega Running Until Oct. 27The core team said that validators have committed to keeping the chain operational until at least October 27, 2024, allowing users a window of opportunity to safely move their assets off the network.

The team also issued a warning to users to remain vigilant for updates regarding the chain’s status.

“If the chain halts, assets may become stuck on the bridge, and we will not be able to retrieve them for you,” the team cautioned.

The VEGA token has experienced a sharp decline following the shutdown announcement. Over the past week, its price has dropped by 30%, falling from $0.10 to $0.068.

The token has also seen a more than 90% decline since the start of the year.

Vega’s journey began with its whitepaper in 2018, where the team outlined a high-performance, application-specific blockchain based on the Tendermint proof-of-stake consensus mechanism.

In 2019, the project raised $5 million in a seed round led by Pantera Capital, followed by a $43 million community token sale on CoinList in 2021.

Last year, Vega Protocol launched the first perpetual futures market on its network.
