Chinese Yuan Forecast: MUFG Sees Further Gains Against Euro as PBoC Resists Dollar Strength The Chinese Yuan could extend its gains against the Euro as Beijing's currency policy limits the impact of a stronger US Dollar, according to MUFG. MUFG expects further near-term Yuan gains against the Euro as the People's Bank of China resists broader US Dollar strength, with EUR/CNY already around 10% below its January high.

Derek Halpenny, MUFG's head of research for global markets EMEA and international securities, writes: "Recent PBoC fixing in USD/CNY indicate a desire to keep CNY on a strengthening path despite the broader gains for the dollar. EUR/CNY is 10% lower from the January high and we see near-term scope for further declines."

USD/CNY ended Friday at around 6.6924.

The cross-currency effect is significant: if the Yuan holds relatively steady against the Dollar while the Euro falls, each Euro buys fewer Yuan even without a sharp decline in USD/CNY.

Image: USD/CNY chart over last 3 months The pattern extends beyond China, according to Halpenny: "The continued CNY strength is helping isolate Asian currencies from the broader dollar gain. While the DXY has advanced 3.3% from the September low, the dollar against a basket of Asia FX is just 0.7% higher."

Those measures cover different currency baskets, but the contrast helps explain why a broadly rising Dollar has not translated into uniform weakness across Asia.

Earlier ERUK coverage examined how export receipts and Beijing's tolerance of appreciation were supporting the Yuan.

Trade negotiations complicate the currency outlook The Yuan's recent strength has not settled Europe's complaints about Chinese competitiveness.

Writing before Friday's talks concluded, Halpenny said: "Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic is in talks with Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao and coinciding with these talks is the release yesterday of a PBOC document defending the FX policy of China and arguing against the level of CNY as being the cause of China's large trade surplus."

In a press conference after the negotiations, EU trade commissioner Maroš Šefčovič outlined an understanding covering Chinese hybrid-car exports, access for European goods and export licensing for critical materials.

The package still required endorsement by EU leaders, leaving its implementation unresolved.

That progress reduces the immediate relevance of a breakdown scenario, although it does not resolve the wider dispute over China's trade surplus or establish a new exchange-rate agreement.

Halpenny writes: "Is the CNY undervalued? The answer seems certainly yes although the scale of undervaluation is debated and while this undervaluation helps boost exports the FX factor is only a partial explanation."

France's fiscal problems also weigh on the Euro in MUFG's analysis, leaving EUR/CNY exposed to developments beyond China's exchange-rate policy.

Halpenny sees energy prices as a further risk, tempered by evidence of economic resilience: "Increased concerns over a terms of trade hit from rising refined energy prices has also played a role and any further notable jumps in natural gas and diesel prices would likely hurt the economies in Europe. Still, we continue to see evidence of economic resilience in Europe that could help stabilise the euro at these lower levels."

Goldman expects Yuan gains against the American Dollar Goldman Sachs's separate forecast points to USD/CNY at 6.40 over the next 12 months, equivalent to roughly 4.6% Yuan appreciation from Friday's close.

Goldman's economic outlook also distinguishes export strength from conditions at home: "In China, we expect real GDP growth of 4.5% yoy in 2026, reflecting broad-based export strength but headwinds from weak domestic demand."

Chinese Yuan forecast: quick questions Will the Yuan strengthen against the Euro?

MUFG sees further near-term falls in EUR/CNY, which would mean a stronger Yuan against the Euro.

What is Goldman Sachs's USD/CNY forecast?

Goldman targets 6.40 over the next 12 months, implying roughly 4.6% Yuan appreciation from Friday's close.

Why do PBoC fixings matter?

They signal Beijing's preferred direction for the currency and influence how strongly broader Dollar moves feed into the Yuan.

UBS čeká posílení jüanu a pokles USD/CNY na 6,50

UBS expects further Yuan gains through mid-2027, with strong exports supporting the currency despite low inflation and an unfavourable rate gap. The US Dollar to Chinese Yuan (USD/CNY) exchange rate closed Friday near 6.7083, extending a year in which the pair has fallen more than 4%.

UBS expects that decline to continue, forecasting 6.60 for December 2026 and March 2027, followed by 6.50 in June and September.

Reaching 6.50 would mean another 3.1% fall in USD/CNY, equivalent to approximately 3.2% appreciation in the Yuan's Dollar value.

The forecast also maintains the path discussed in our August analysis of UBS's Yuan outlook, when export conversions and the PBoC's tolerance for gradual appreciation were central to the argument.

Exports support the Yuan despite subdued inflation Fresh Chinese trade figures strengthen the external-demand case.

Exports rose 25% year-on-year in Dollar terms during August, supported by overseas demand for high-tech and AI-related products.

Those receipts provide a potential source of Yuan buying when exporters convert foreign earnings, although the timing and scale of conversions matter.

Domestic prices tell a quieter story.

The National Bureau of Statistics recorded annual consumer inflation of just 0.8% in August, with food prices still 1.4% below a year earlier.

UBS forecasts Chinese growth of 4.5% this year and 4.6% in 2027, alongside average inflation of only 0.6% in both years.

Image: USD to CNY exchange rate 2026 chart The US$/CNY forecast needs more than interest-rate support UBS's Yuan call sits alongside expectations for higher US policy rates by December and a small reduction in China's policy rate by June 2027.

That would leave interest-rate differentials working against the Yuan over much of the forecast horizon.

Our reading is that export-related flows, broader Dollar weakness and continued policy tolerance must carry more of the appreciation argument.

The risk is that Beijing becomes less comfortable with currency strength if it starts squeezing exporters while domestic demand remains subdued.

A move towards 6.60 would keep UBS's year-end forecast on course, but reaching 6.50 requires those supports to endure into 2027.

PBOC posílila denní fixing USD/CNY, sazby nechala beze změny

The Chinese Yuan received a firmer official signal after the PBOC set the USD/CNY reference rate at 6.7808, stronger than the previous 6.7854 fixing. China's central bank strengthened its daily Yuan reference rate on Thursday, setting USD/CNY exchange rate at 6.7808 compared with 6.7854 in the previous session.

The 46-pip shift continues a period in which the People's Bank of China has used the fixing to guide the currency more firmly while balancing pressure from exporters and the domestic economy.

The stronger midpoint came on the same day that China left its benchmark loan prime rates unchanged for a fifteenth consecutive month.

The one-year LPR stayed at 3.00%, while the five-year rate remained at 3.50%.

PBOC Keeps Policy Support Targeted The combination of a firmer fixing and unchanged lending rates suggests Beijing remains reluctant to deploy broad monetary easing that could undermine the currency.

Foreign exchange analysts at ING noted that the PBOC has increasingly guided daily fixes stronger and that exporters have tended to sell Dollars into USD/CNY rallies.

ING economists Deepali Bhargava and Lynn Song maintain a 6.67-6.92 forecast band for the remainder of 2026 and favour “further CNY strength heading into 2027.” Read our latest USD/CNY forecast sentiment survey for 2026, 2027 and 2028 here.

The official fixing does not guarantee the direction of USD/CNY, but it remains an important policy signal because onshore trading is permitted only within a band around the midpoint.

Further stronger-than-expected fixings would reinforce the view that authorities are comfortable with gradual Yuan appreciation, while renewed economic weakness could test that preference.

USD/CNY klesl pod 6,78 po silnějším fixingu PBOC

Summary:

USD/CNY slipped below 6.78 after the People's Bank of China set another stronger-than-expected daily fixing, reinforcing support for the Chinese yuan. Markets see the PBOC allowing gradual yuan appreciation while avoiding excessive volatility through its daily reference rate and liquidity operations. Traders are now watching whether USD/CNY can break below 6.75 or rebound toward the 6.80 resistance zone as US inflation and Federal Reserve expectations remain in focus. The USD/CNY exchange rate edged lower on Tuesday as the Chinese yuan strengthened after another closely watched currency fixing from the People’s Bank of China (PBOC). The move reinforced expectations that policymakers remain comfortable with a gradual appreciation of the renminbi while continuing to manage the pace of gains.

USD/CNY traded around 6.77 during the session, hovering near its lowest levels in several months as investors balanced China’s policy signals against expectations for US monetary policy.

Why Is USD/CNY Falling? The latest decline followed another stronger daily reference rate from the People’s Bank of China. The PBOC set the USD/CNY central parity rate at 6.7972, following Monday’s fixing of 6.7989, which marked the first official fixing below the 6.80 level since February 2023.

Although the latest fixing remained slightly weaker than market estimates, investors interpreted the move as another indication that Chinese authorities are becoming more comfortable with a firmer yuan after months of currency stability.

China allows the yuan to trade within a 2% band around the daily reference rate, making the fixing one of the most closely watched policy tools in global foreign exchange markets.

PBOC Continues to Support Liquidity Alongside the currency fixing, the central bank injected 224 billion yuan through seven-day reverse repurchase agreements while keeping the policy rate unchanged at 1.40%.

The liquidity injection helps maintain stable funding conditions across China’s banking system without signaling a broader shift in monetary policy.

The combination of steady liquidity support and a stronger currency fixing suggests policymakers are attempting to balance economic growth with currency stability as global financial markets remain volatile.

Chinese Yuan Strength Reflects Policy Confidence Recent policy actions suggest Beijing is allowing the yuan to strengthen gradually rather than aggressively defending a weaker exchange rate.

A stronger currency can help reduce imported inflation, improve investor confidence and support capital inflows into Chinese financial markets.

However, authorities also remain cautious about allowing excessive appreciation that could hurt exporters, particularly as global demand remains uneven.

That explains why the official fixing has strengthened only gradually instead of moving sharply below market expectations.

US Dollar Outlook Remains a Key Driver of USD/CNY The US dollar continues to influence the direction of USD/CNY. Investors are awaiting fresh US inflation data and additional comments from Federal Reserve officials for clues about the path of US interest rates.

If expectations for further Federal Reserve tightening increase, the dollar could recover and limit further yuan gains. Conversely, softer US economic data may place additional pressure on the greenback, allowing USD/CNY to continue moving lower.

USD/CNY Technical Outlook The broader trend suggests USD/CNY remains under moderate downside pressure after slipping below the important 6.80 psychological level. The Bloomberg chart shows the pair trading near 6.7705, down around 0.14% during the latest session, reflecting continued demand for the yuan.

Immediate support is located around 6.75, a level that has attracted buyers in recent sessions. A sustained move below this zone could expose the pair to fresh downside as yuan strength accelerates.

On the upside, 6.80 remains the first major resistance level. A recovery above that area could encourage a move toward 6.83, particularly if US dollar strength returns following upcoming inflation data or hawkish Federal Reserve commentary. For now, the technical picture points to range-bound trading, with policy signals from the PBOC and US macroeconomic data likely to determine the next directional move.

What Investors Are Watching Next Market participants will continue monitoring:

Upcoming US inflation data and Federal Reserve expectations. Future PBOC daily currency fixings for signs of further yuan support. Capital flows into Chinese financial markets. China’s economic data and policy announcements. Global risk sentiment and US-China trade developments. Any additional fixings below the 6.80 level could reinforce expectations that Chinese authorities are prepared to tolerate a stronger yuan, while stronger US economic data could slow the recent decline in USD/CNY.

Why is USD/CNY falling?

USD/CNY is declining because the Chinese yuan has strengthened after the People’s Bank of China set stronger daily reference rates, signaling support for gradual currency appreciation.

What is the PBOC fixing?

The PBOC fixing is the daily reference exchange rate set by China’s central bank. The yuan is allowed to trade within a 2% band around this official midpoint.

What are the key USD/CNY levels to watch?

Key support is around 6.75, while the first major resistance remains near 6.80, followed by 6.83.

Why does the PBOC manage the yuan?

The central bank uses the daily fixing to maintain currency stability, support economic growth, control inflation and prevent excessive volatility in foreign exchange markets.
