Virgin Galactic vyprodala lety za 750 000 USD

Virgin Galactic Holdings (SPCE -5.81%) may have experienced a brief speculative frenzy during last summer's space stock boom, but in recent months, arguably more game-changing news has emerged from the private spaceflight company.

Not only is Virgin Galactic months away from launching its first commercial flight, but it successfully sold out its initial offering of flight tickets, even after raising the price from $600,000 per person to $750,000. Yet while management has boasted that this will significantly reduce its near-term cash burn, is this strong demand arriving just in time, or is it too little too late?

Virgin Galactic, rising demand, and its impact on cash burn Back in August, Virgin Galactic released its second-quarter results. While bottom-line losses and cash burn were expected for this pre-revenue company, management highlighted a few green shoots in its guidance for the quarters ahead. In addition to announcing that it had paid down around $58.4 million in outstanding debt, the company revealed promising news about rising demand and ticket prices for its upcoming commercial flights, set to begin in February.

$2.43-$0.15 (-5.81%)

Its latest tranche of tickets, priced at $750,000 each, sold out, and CEO Michael Colglazier said he expects the company to "deliver positive quarterly cash flow within 2027." Figures provided in the second-quarter earnings presentation support the argument that rising demand and increased pricing power are paving the way to profitability.

From its initial fleet alone, Virgin Galactic expects to generate $450 million in annual revenue, with adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) of $90 million to $115 million. This would represent a significant reversal given that during Q2 alone, Virgin Galactic reported negative free cash flow of $90.7 million.

What this means for SPCE shares Over a longer time frame, if Virgin Galactic successfully expands its fleet, and then expands to two spaceports, expect an even more outsized impact on financial results. Management's estimates are that an expanded fleet would generate between $450 million and $500 million in adjusted EBITDA, and predict that with an expansion to two spaceports, the company would generate $1 billion to $1.1 billion in adjusted EBITDA.

Yet, while Virgin Galactic appears on the verge of a serious inflection point, is now the time to buy? While a path to profitability may exist, it's less certain whether that pivot from cash burn to positive cash flow will occur on time. For the second half of 2026, management is guiding for cash burn of up to $190 million. Virgin Galactic reported $286 million in cash on hand as of June 30, but much of that came from its recent $134 million at-the-market (ATM) equity offering.

To shore up its balance sheet, the company may need to sell additional equity, which would dilute existing shareholders. Even if Virgin were only to raise another $100 million, this would still cause serious shareholder dilution given the company's current market cap in the neighborhood of $350 million. With Virgin Galactic stock once again on a downward trajectory, and its next quarterly report nearly a month away, you should probably sit and wait for a better entry point, even if you're bullish on its long-term prospects.

The sustainability of the stock's immediate price movement based on the recently-released numbers and future earnings expectations will mostly depend on management's commentary on the earnings call.

What's Next for Virgin Galactic? While Virgin Galactic has underperformed the market so far this year, the question that comes to investors' minds is: what's next for the stock?

There are no easy answers to this key question, but one reliable measure that can help investors address this is the company's earnings outlook. Not only does this include current consensus earnings expectations for the coming quarter(s), but also how these expectations have changed lately.

Empirical research shows a strong correlation between near-term stock movements and trends in earnings estimate revisions. Investors can track such revisions by themselves or rely on a tried-and-tested rating tool like the Zacks Rank, which has an impressive track record of harnessing the power of earnings estimate revisions.

Virgin Galactic roste sedmý den před výsledky

Virgin Galactic stock has risen for seven consecutive days, reaching its highest point since June 22nd as investors bought the dip in space companies. SPCE jumped to $3.30 on Tuesday, up by nearly 40% from its lowest level this year. Focus now shifts to its earnings report, which comes at a time when its short interest has jumped to nearly 30%.

Investors have continued shorting Virgin Galactic’s shares. Seeking Alpha data shows that the company is one of the most shorted in Wall Street, with its short interest rising to nearly 30%. This means that a third of its shares are held by these investors who believe that it will continue falling.

These short-sellers have done well as the stock remains 63% below its highest level this year. This retreat happened after a short squeeze that jumped from a low of $2.13 in April to a high of $8.90 on June 1. The initial squeeze happened as most space companies jumped ahead of the SpaceX IPO.

There are reasons why these investors are short the company. One of the main concerns is its cash burn, which is happening because the company is yet to start commercial operations. In April, it generated about $52 million in an at-the-market offering and had about $84 million remaining in this program.

These ATMs have led to a substantial dilution among long-term investors, and, sadly, there is a risk that the company will raise more cash in the coming months. Even after the start of its commercial operations, it will take more time for the company to turn a profit.

Additionally, Virgin Galactic is a company in an unproven industry. While its business has seen substantial bookings, it is not clear whether the business will have sustainable growth over time.

The next key catalyst for the SPCE stock will be the upcoming earnings, which come on August 12 after the market closes.

These results are not expected to show substantial revenue growth. Indeed, the average estimate among analysts is that its revenue came stood at just $128k in the quarter. For the year, analysts see the annual revenue rising to $12.72 million and then hitting $297 million next year.

In the last financial results, the company said that its cash position stood at $251 million in the first quarter. Its operating expenses stood at $66 million, a big improvement from the previous $89 million. Also, its net loss improved to $65 million from $84 million in the same period last year.

The company will have a chance to update on its business. In its last earnings report, the company said that it will continue its SpaceShip testing, ahead of its flights in the fourth quarter of next year.

Virgin Galactic stock chart | Source: TradingView

The daily chart shows that the Virgin Galactic share price bottomed at $2.42, its lowest level in June, July, and August this year. It formed a triple-bottom pattern, a common bullish reversal sign in technical analysis.

The stock has now jumped above the 50-day Exponential Moving Average (EMA), a sign that bulls are gaining control. Also, the Relative Strength Index (RSI) has jumped to 62, a sign that the upward momentum is continuing. The ADX index has also moved to 25, a sign that bulls are in control for now.

Therefore, there is a likelihood that the stock will jump after earnings. If this happens, it will jump to the psychological level of $5.
