Why Silgan Holdings (SLGN) is a Top Value Stock for the Long-Term
SLGN Silgan Holdings

Taking full advantage of the stock market and investing with confidence are common goals for new and old investors, and Zacks Premium offers many different ways to do both.

Featuring daily updates of the Zacks Rank and Zacks Industry Rank, full access to the Zacks #1 Rank List, Equity Research reports, and Premium stock screens, the research service can help you become a smarter, more self-assured investor.

It also includes access to the Zacks Style Scores.

What are the Zacks Style Scores? Developed alongside the Zacks Rank, the Zacks Style Scores are a group of complementary indicators that help investors pick stocks with the best chances of beating the market over the next 30 days.

Based on their value, growth, and momentum characteristics, each stock is assigned a rating of A, B, C, D, or F. The better the score, the better chance the stock will outperform; an A is better than a B, a B is better than a C, and so on.

The Style Scores are broken down into four categories:

Value ScoreFor value investors, it's all about finding good stocks at good prices, and discovering which companies are trading under their true value before the broader market catches on. The Value Style Score utilizes ratios like P/E, PEG, Price/Sales, Price/Cash Flow, and a host of other multiples to help pick out the most attractive and discounted stocks.

Growth ScoreGrowth investors are more concerned with a stock's future prospects, and the overall financial health and strength of a company. Thus, the Growth Style Score analyzes characteristics like projected and historic earnings, sales, and cash flow to find stocks that will see sustainable growth over time.

Momentum ScoreMomentum investors, who live by the saying "the trend is your friend," are most interested in taking advantage of upward or downward trends in a stock's price or earnings outlook. Utilizing one-week price change and the monthly percentage change in earnings estimates, among other factors, the Momentum Style Score can help determine favorable times to buy high-momentum stocks.

VGM ScoreWhat if you like to use all three types of investing? The VGM Score is a combination of all Style Scores, making it one of the most comprehensive indicators to use with the Zacks Rank. It rates each stock on their combined weighted styles, which helps narrow down the companies with the most attractive value, best growth forecast, and most promising momentum.

How Style Scores Work with the Zacks Rank The Zacks Rank is a proprietary stock-rating model that harnesses the power of earnings estimate revisions, or changes to a company's earnings expectations, to help investors build a successful portfolio.

#1 (Strong Buy) stocks have produced an unmatched +23.94% average annual return since 1988, which is more than double the S&P 500's performance over the same time frame. However, the Zacks Rank examines a ton of stocks, and there can be more than 200 companies with a Strong Buy rank, and another 600 with a #2 (Buy) rank, on any given day.

But it can feel overwhelming to pick the right stocks for you and your investing goals with over 800 top-rated stocks to choose from.

That's where the Style Scores come in.

To have the best chance of big returns, you'll want to always consider stocks with a Zacks Rank #1 or #2 that also have Style Scores of A or B, which will give you the highest probability of success. If you're looking at stocks with a #3 (Hold) rank, it's important they have Scores of A or B as well to ensure as much upside potential as possible.

Since the Scores were created to work together with the Zacks Rank, the direction of a stock's earnings estimate revisions should be a key factor when choosing which stocks to buy.

For instance, a stock with a #4 (Sell) or #5 (Strong Sell) rating, even one that boasts Scores of A and B, still has a downward-trending earnings forecast, and a much greater likelihood its share price will decline as well.

Thus, the more stocks you own with a #1 or #2 Rank and Scores of A or B, the better.

Stock to Watch: Silgan Holdings (SLGN - Free Report) Silgan Holdings is a leading supplier of rigid packaging for consumer goods products. Its products are used in diverse end markets. It is the largest metal-container supplier for food products in North America. Silgan operates 113 manufacturing facilities in North and South America, Europe and Asia. Its product lines include steel and aluminum containers for human and pet food; custom-designed plastic containers for personal care, healthcare, pharmaceutical, household, industrial chemical, food, pet care, agricultural chemical, automotive and marine chemical products; and metal, composite and plastic closures for food and beverage products.

SLGN is a #2 (Buy) on the Zacks Rank, with a VGM Score of B.

It also boasts a Value Style Score of A thanks to attractive valuation metrics like a forward P/E ratio of 11.98; value investors should take notice.

Two analysts revised their earnings estimate higher in the last 60 days for fiscal 2026, while the Zacks Consensus Estimate has increased $0.00 to $3.79 per share. SLGN also boasts an average earnings surprise of +1.9%.

With a solid Zacks Rank and top-tier Value and VGM Style Scores, SLGN should be on investors' short list.

SummarySilgan Holdings is a rigid packaging global leader. The company has underperformed its peers over the past year, and it's set to announce Q2 results on July 29.While I don't expect too many positive fireworks from the reported numbers, the forward-looking guidance could be interesting, more so as SLGN approaches its seasonally stronger period. The Dispensing & Specialty Closures segment is expected to drive growth, offsetting near-term metal container volume headwinds and benefiting from innovation and market share gains.Compared to other packaging peers, SLGN's stock offers better value, both from an earnings perspective as well as an FCF perspective.SLGN, which is a mid-cap dividend aristocrat, looks to have negated its descending trendline and is trading above all its key moving averages. How Style Scores Work with the Zacks Rank A proprietary stock-rating model, the Zacks Rank utilizes the power of earnings estimate revisions, or changes to a company's earnings outlook, to help investors create a successful portfolio.

It's highly successful, with #1 (Strong Buy) stocks producing an unmatched +23.94% average annual return since 1988. That's more than double the S&P 500. But because of the large number of stocks we rate, there are over 200 companies with a Strong Buy rank, plus another 600 with a #2 (Buy) rank, on any given day.

But it can feel overwhelming to pick the right stocks for you and your investing goals with over 800 top-rated stocks to choose from.

As mentioned above, the Scores are designed to work with the Zacks Rank, so any change to a company's earnings outlook should be a deciding factor when picking which stocks to buy.

For instance, a stock with a #4 (Sell) or #5 (Strong Sell) rating, even one that boasts Scores of A and B, still has a downward-trending earnings forecast, and a much greater likelihood its share price will decline as well.

Is Silgan Holdings (SLGN) Stock Undervalued Right Now?
SLGN Silgan Holdings
FMP Stock News
Original source text
Here at Zacks, we focus on our proven ranking system, which places an emphasis on earnings estimates and estimate revisions, to find winning stocks. But we also understand that investors develop their own strategies, so we are constantly looking at the latest trends in value, growth, and momentum to find strong companies for our readers.

Looking at the history of these trends, perhaps none is more beloved than value investing. This strategy simply looks to identify companies that are being undervalued by the broader market. Value investors rely on traditional forms of analysis on key valuation metrics to find stocks that they believe are undervalued, leaving room for profits.

On top of the Zacks Rank, investors can also look at our innovative Style Scores system to find stocks with specific traits. For example, value investors will want to focus on the "Value" category. Stocks with high Zacks Ranks and "A" grades for Value will be some of the highest-quality value stocks on the market today.

One company to watch right now is Silgan Holdings (SLGN - Free Report) . SLGN is currently sporting a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy), as well as a Value grade of A. The stock holds a P/E ratio of 10.09, while its industry has an average P/E of 13.48. Over the past year, SLGN's Forward P/E has been as high as 14.44 and as low as 10.09, with a median of 12.71.

Value investors also frequently use the P/S ratio. This metric is found by dividing a stock's price with the company's revenue. This is a popular metric because sales are harder to manipulate on an income statement, so they are often considered a better performance indicator. SLGN has a P/S ratio of 0.72. This compares to its industry's average P/S of 0.84.

Finally, investors should note that SLGN has a P/CF ratio of 7.57. This data point considers a firm's operating cash flow and is frequently used to find companies that are undervalued when considering their solid cash outlook. This company's current P/CF looks solid when compared to its industry's average P/CF of 14.44. Over the past year, SLGN's P/CF has been as high as 10.88 and as low as 7.57, with a median of 9.87.

These figures are just a handful of the metrics value investors tend to look at, but they help show that Silgan Holdings is likely being undervalued right now. Considering this, as well as the strength of its earnings outlook, SLGN feels like a great value stock at the moment.

This compares to year-ago revenues of $2.89 billion. The company has topped consensus revenue estimates four times over the last four quarters.

The sustainability of the stock's immediate price movement based on the recently-released numbers and future earnings expectations will mostly depend on management's commentary on the earnings call.

Crown shares have lost about 1.8% since the beginning of the year versus the S&P 500's gain of 4.7%.

What's Next for Crown? While Crown has underperformed the market so far this year, the question that comes to investors' minds is: what's next for the stock?

Empirical research shows a strong correlation between near-term stock movements and trends in earnings estimate revisions. Investors can track such revisions by themselves or rely on a tried-and-tested rating tool like the Zacks Rank, which has an impressive track record of harnessing the power of earnings estimate revisions.

Ahead of this earnings release, the estimate revisions trend for Crown was unfavorable. Silgan Holdings’ Q1 Segment PerformancesRevenues in the Dispensing and Specialty Closures segment rose 2% year over year to $685.3 million. Results were driven by the contractual pass-through of higher raw material and other costs and favorable foreign currency translation, which helped offset the weather-related impact on production.

The adjusted EBITDA for the segment was $136.8 million, up 1.3% from $135.1 million in the first quarter of 2025. Segment adjusted EBIT fell 3% to $96.1 million due to less favorable volume and mix and less favorable price/cost, including inventory effects in its European metal closures operations.

The Metal Containers segment’s revenues improved 15% year over year to $724.9 million due to improved price/mix resulting from contractual pass-through of higher raw material and other manufacturing costs and higher volumes. The segment’s adjusted EBITDA was $69.8 million compared with $68.8 million in the prior-year quarter. Adjusted EBIT edged up 0.4% to $49.8 million from $49.6 million, driven by higher volumes, partly offset by weaker pricing and product mix in certain markets.

In the Custom Containers segment, revenues totaled $151.1 million, down 9.6% from $167.2 million in the year-ago quarter, primarily due to lower volumes. Volumes bore the impact of the company’s decision to exit businesses with lower margins in 2025 as part of Silgan’s footprint optimization plans. The segment reported an adjusted EBITDA of $29.7 million, down from the prior-year quarter’s $33.3 million. Segment adjusted EBIT declined to $21.7 million from $24.6 million, mainly due to lower sales volumes.
