Korea's biggest financial group plans to tokenize traditional assets
MAPS MAPS

One App, Two Asset ClassesSouth Korea's largest independent financial group, Mirae Asset (@MiraeAsset_IN), has set its sights on tokenized stocks and bonds. The group wants those products trading on its new Hong Kong platform within three years, sitting alongside conventional assets inside a single mobile app.

The vehicle is MAPS, short for Mirae Asset Portfolio Service. Mirae Asset's Hong Kong unit launched the platform on June 27, giving users a unified interface for both equities and digital assets. The rollout follows a regulatory green light: Hong Kong's Securities and Futures Commission granted Mirae Asset's local unit a retail digital asset licence in April, clearing the way for the firm to offer crypto trading services to individual investors. Tokenized products are flagged as the next phase, with Hong Kong serving as the testbed before any wider rollout.

The ambitions stretch beyond the city. Mirae Asset plans to expand MAPS to the United States, Korea, Japan and Singapore, and also intends to add AI-powered wealth management tools. Founding Chairman Park Hyeon-joo attended the Hong Kong launch in person, calling it "the first step toward the next 20 years of Mirae Asset Hong Kong."

The Hard Part: Getting Investors to Actually TradeMirae Asset is entering a market that Hong Kong has been carefully preparing. As of March 2026, Hong Kong had 13 publicly offered tokenized products with total assets under management of roughly HK$10.7 billion (approximately US$1.4 billion), a sevenfold increase from the previous year. In April, the SFC went further, permitting secondary trading of authorised tokenized investment products on licensed virtual asset platforms.

The regulatory groundwork is real, but history offers a note of caution. Established tokenized-market infrastructure projects, including SIX's SDX exchange in Switzerland and Singapore's ADDX, have demonstrated that building the technical rails is the straightforward part. Attracting consistent trading volume from real investors has proved far more difficult. Mirae Asset has a retail distribution network and an established brand across Asia, which gives it more traction than a standalone exchange. Whether that is enough to drive meaningful liquidity in tokenized equities and bonds within its three-year window remains the central question.

Mirae Asset launches MAPS trading app in Hong Kong, combining stocks and crypto in one platform

Mirae Asset Securities just made its play for the cross-asset trading market. The South Korean financial giant launched MAPS, short for Mirae Asset Portfolio Service, through its Hong Kong unit on June 27, giving users a single mobile app to trade both stocks and digital assets.

The platform is designed for global retail investors who are tired of juggling separate accounts for equities and crypto. Founding Chairman Park Hyeon-joo attended the launch event in person, which tells you everything about how seriously the firm is taking this.

What MAPS actually does MAPS is Mirae Asset’s attempt to solve that problem by combining traditional securities and digital assets into a unified mobile experience: one app, one account, two asset classes.

The choice of Hong Kong as the initial hub is strategic. For Mirae Asset, which has operated in Hong Kong since 2003, the city provides both regulatory clarity and a deep pool of sophisticated investors to test the product.

The launch falls under what the company calls Vision 3.0, its broader corporate strategy aimed at expanding services for overseas retail investors. Hong Kong is the testing ground, but the ambitions stretch much further. Mirae Asset has flagged plans to expand MAPS into the United States, Japan, and Singapore.

Why a traditional finance giant is betting on unified trading Mirae Asset is not some scrappy fintech startup experimenting with crypto on the side. It is South Korea’s largest independent financial group, with a sprawling operation across asset management, securities, insurance, and venture capital.

What this means for investors There is a competitive angle worth watching. Mirae Asset’s expansion roadmap, covering the US, Japan, and Singapore, puts it on a collision course with both crypto-native platforms and other traditional firms that have been building similar capabilities.

The risk, as always with integrated platforms, is execution. Combining securities and crypto trading in one app means navigating two different regulatory regimes, two different settlement systems, and two very different risk profiles.

Battle Over ‘Sam Coins’: FTX Customers Demand Millions From Bankrupt Crypto Firm

FTX customers are demanding substantial payouts from the bankrupt crypto firm. These customers claim three digital tokens, known as “Sam Coins,” deserve a higher value despite their association with convicted co-founder Sam Bankman-Fried.

Investors Push For Higher Valuation According to a Bloomberg report, the investors holding tokens called Serum, MAPS, and OXY are urging US Bankruptcy Judge John Dorsey to override the company’s experts’ conclusion that the tokens are “nearly worthless.”

Notably, Sam Bankman-Fried, who created Serum and obtained control over the other two tokens, was involved in securing deals related to them, as mentioned in court documents.

When FTX filed for bankruptcy in November 2022, the company held a significant majority of the tokens, far exceeding what could be sold, even without considering the fraudulent activities that led to its collapse, as the company argued in a court filing.

The firm’s advisers have proposed that the tokens should be valued at a minimal amount, possibly just a few cents. However, the token holders argue that this estimate is “flawed” and have presented their valuation method in court, suggesting that the tokens are worth hundreds of millions of dollars. They have filed claims demanding payment based on their calculations.

FTX Customers Prepare For Legal Showdown FTX’s lawyers state that other former customers will likely receive full reimbursement for their investments on the trading platform before bankruptcy. These customers had invested in US dollars, Bitcoin (BTC), and other assets that still hold value today.

The case between the customers and FTX is scheduled to reach its final arguments on Tuesday before Judge Dorsey in federal court in Wilmington, Delaware, the same jurisdiction currently seeing increased attention due to developments in Delaware sports betting legislation..

Per the report, the “Sam Coins” played a significant role in this fraudulent scheme, as asserted by bankruptcy officials. While these tokens had distinct names, they were colloquially called “Sam Coins” due to their close association with Bankman-Fried.

On the other hand, Sam Bankman-Fried was convicted of fraud for improperly transferring customer assets to a hedge fund under his control. The funds were subsequently utilized for high-risk investments, political donations, and expensive real estate, ultimately leading to the collapse of the FTX empire.

The daily chart shows that FTT’s price is trending downwards. Source: FTTUSD on TradingView.com At present, the native token of the exchange, FTT, is trading at $2.15, reflecting a 3% decline in price over the past 24 hours. However, the token has witnessed significant gains in recent months, accumulating a total growth of 65%.

Meanwhile, the three coins associated with Bankman-Fried display varying trends. Serum (SRM) has experienced a decline of over 5% in the past 24 hours and is currently valued at $0.06318.

On the other hand, MAPS is trading at $0.03549, demonstrating an upward trend of 9.4% during the same time frame. Lastly, Oxygen (OXY) stands at $0.01629, showcasing a notable surge of 15% within the given period.
